BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Multiple Chinese filmmakers on Thursday outlined the means that can be used to amplify the overseas influence of Chinese film, speaking at a press conference that focused on the development of China's film industry.

The press conference, held by the State Council Information Office, gathered filmmakers who had worked on some of China's most popular films in recent years.

The international influence of films is an important criterion in evaluating the potency of a country's film industry, said Wang Jun, president of Shanghai Film Group. Its Shanghai Animation Film Studio subsidiary -- one of China's most prestigious animation studios -- released animated feature "Nobody" this year.

Speaking of boosting the influence of Chinese film worldwide, Wang emphasized the importance of greater opening-up, and of engaging proactively in international cooperation and exchange. "In addition, we must place more focus on the capabilities and methods of international film co-creation, while expanding our overseas markets, distribution channels and resources."

Shen Ao, director of "Dead to Rights," a Chinese summer box office hit which recounts the grim history of the Nanjing Massacre, placed greater emphasis on the content aspect of Chinese film when sharing his thoughts on the matter.

"I think the most pressing task is to show ethos instead of symbols," Shen said on how Chinese films can gain success overseas. "It is necessary to avoid simply cramming Chinese elements into films and instead showcase the essence of Chinese culture and the Chinese spirit." He also suggested that the Chinese film industry should explore more genres.

By Wednesday, China's summer vacation box office earnings totaled 7.5 billion yuan (1.02 billion U.S. dollars). Leading the pack was "Dead To Rights," which had generated a total box office of 1.5 billion yuan. ■
