MADRID, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Monday that current Spain U-23 team coach Sonia Bermudez will replace Montse Tome as the national senior women's soccer team coach.
Bermudez, a former Spain international, had played for FC Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Rayo Vallecano and Levante before retiring as a player in 2020. Since then, she had coaching spells at Spain U-19 and U-23 teams.
The RFEF said said that it will not renew Tome's contract which expires at the end of August.
In the two years after Spain won the 2023 World Cup finals, Tome led Spain to victory in the 2024 Nations League and to second place in this summer's European Championships, only losing the final to England on penalties.
Under Tome's two-year guidance, Spain also qualified for the 2026 Final-Four of the Nations League but finished fourth in Paris 2024. ■
