VIENTIANE, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Laos is working to enhance local farmers' skills in durian cultivation and their understanding of export preparation guidelines to ensure Lao durian meets international quality and regulatory standards.

According to a report from the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry on Monday, the Lao Agricultural Business Association, in collaboration with its partners, organized a technical workshop to provide Lao durian growers with practical knowledge on cultivation techniques, proper tree care, and export regulations.

The workshop, held in Lao capital Vientiane last Friday, aimed to unite durian growers and interested entrepreneurs nationwide, fostering cooperation among them. It also sought to enhance participants' skills and technical knowledge in durian cultivation, from initial planting to harvest, to improve yields and fruit quality.

Currently, durian is cultivated on 269 hectares of land across the country, with 18,957 trees planted. By 2026, production is expected to reach about 400 tons of high-quality durian, ready to supply both domestic and international markets, according to the report.

Speaking at the meeting, Bounchan Kombounyasith, director general of the Department of Agriculture under the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, emphasized the government's commitment to promoting agricultural production in line with the national socio-economic development plan, national agenda, and policies aimed at building a self-reliant and independent economy.

He noted that the ministry is focused on two key objectives, including ensuring national food security and advancing the commercialization of agricultural production.

The Lao Agricultural Business Association remains committed to supporting its members in accessing markets, fostering collaboration, building capacity, and bridging connections between farmers and financial institutions.
