BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Fourth seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia advanced to the third round of the China Open with a 6-2, 6-2 win over China's Zhu Lin in the opening match on the Diamond Court of the National Tennis Center on Saturday.
Andreeva broke twice in the first set to establish a 4-1 lead before closing it out 6-2. The 18-year-old Russian maintained her momentum in the second, breaking Zhu twice more to seal victory in one hour 18 minutes.
It was Andreeva's third appearance in Beijing. She first came as a qualifier in 2023, reaching the round of 16 before falling to Elena Rybakina, and last year advanced to the quarterfinals as the 17th seed before losing to home favorite Zheng Qinwen.
Now ranked world No. 5, Andreeva has enjoyed a breakthrough season, winning back-to-back titles in Doha and Indian Wells earlier this year.
Zhu, 31, ranked No. 253, was playing in her seventh China Open and reached the second round for only the second time in her career. Her last appearance in the round of 32 came in 2014.
Andreeva will next face Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who upset 29th seed Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 7-5, 6-4. ■
